Raasepori ATV crash kills boy and grandfather, no mechanical fault suspected

An ATV crash in Raasepori last Tuesday killed a middle-school-aged boy and his grandfather after the vehicle left a forest road and overturned into a nearby stream, Yle reports.

Police are investigating the sequence of events, conducting on-site examinations, and awaiting forensic results to determine the exact cause of the fatal injuries. So far, no technical failure has been detected in the ATV.

“At this point, we have no reason to suspect a mechanical issue,” said Mats Sjöholm, the lead investigator and detective chief inspector with the Western Uusimaa Police. “Nothing currently indicates that, though it remains part of the inquiry.”

According to Sjöholm, the pair had a reasonable purpose for the trip and were in good spirits. The boy was visiting his grandparents at the time. Police do not suspect excessive speed or impairment as factors.

“This appears to be a truly unfortunate accident,” Sjöholm said.

Relatives reported the incident to police last Tuesday after searching for the two and finding them at the crash site around 11 p.m. There were no witnesses to the accident.

The road where the crash occurred has a significant drop-off to the stream below. Neither victim was wearing a helmet. The stream was described as deeper and more substantial than a typical ditch.

Police are investigating under preliminary charges of endangering traffic safety and causing death, though these may be adjusted as the investigation progresses.
