Construction is starting on the second phase of infrastructure for Borgarlínan, Reykjavik’s public transport project, near Nauthólsvegur and Reykjavik University, mbl.is reported.
The work will reshape Nauthólsvegur, Menntavegur and Menntasveigur, including nearby intersections and connections. Dedicated public transport lanes will run in the centre of the road, separated from general traffic by traffic islands. Walking and cycling paths will be built on both sides.
The roundabout at Nauthólsvegur and Menntavegur will be replaced by traffic-light-controlled junctions. A new Borgarlínan station will be built west of Reykjavik University, along with a new entrance to the university’s main entrance and a new access road to the Icelandic Coast Guard.
Access for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport will be maintained. Menntasveigur will close and become part of the construction zone, with traffic diverted along temporary roads through the car park south of the street. Temporary pedestrian and cycle paths installed during the first phase will remain in place.
One lane in each direction will remain open. Strætó bus stops will continue operating, although their locations may change as work progresses. Construction is scheduled to continue until May 1, 2027. The project is being carried out by Betri samgöngur, Reykjavik City and Veitur. Grafa og grjót ehf. is the contractor, and engineering firm EFLA is supervising the work.
