Elenia begins drone inspections of its power grid

Finnish power grid operator Elenia has begun using drones to inspect its medium- and high-voltage networks for the first time, replacing previous helicopter-based surveys, Yle reports.

The inspections, which started in early June and will continue until the end of August, cover Elenia’s entire network area, stretching as far north as Oulu. The longest survey routes are in the Hämeenlinna region, according to condition management specialist Saana Kaario.

Each section of the grid is flown twice, capturing both photographs and laser data to create 3D models for planning future maintenance and repairs. Urgent fixes will be addressed immediately, while other work is scheduled to begin next year.

“If repair needs are identified, they must be anticipated before faults occur,” Kaario said.

The largest drones measure nearly a meter in size but operate quietly on electric batteries. Flights are supervised, though primarily automated, and conducted by five external pilots under contract.

Drones fly close to power lines, capturing images of poles and conductor structures. While buildings may appear in the footage, any visible people will be blurred to protect privacy. Elenia notifies affected customers via text message before surveys in their area.

This week, high-voltage network inspections are underway in South Ostrobothnia (Seinäjoki, Lapua, Soini) and Central Ostrobothnia (Perho). Medium-voltage surveys will later cover areas including Lappajärvi, Soini, and the eastern shore of Ähtärinjärvi, depending on weather conditions.

Elenia, Finland’s second-largest grid operator, serves over 440,000 customers across Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme, Pirkanmaa, Central Finland, and North and South Ostrobothnia.
