Sales of new caravans in Denmark have more than halved over the past five years, with electric-car owners citing reduced driving range as a key deterrent, according to figures from Statistics Denmark and industry sources.

Lars Blom, managing director of Sk Caravan in Odense, said his dealership has seen a sharp decline in caravan sales in line with the rise of electric vehicles. “It’s unfortunate because camping is a wonderful holiday option and one that’s accessible to everyone, especially families with children,” he said.

In the first six months of 2026, 755 new caravans were registered in Denmark, compared with 2,071 in the same period five years earlier. Tom Westersø Larsen, technical consultant at motoring association FDM, attributed the drop partly to the weight of caravans cutting electric cars’ driving range by up to half.

“Some electric-car owners are more hesitant to travel because charging can take longer, especially when a heavy caravan halves the vehicle’s range,” he said.

Blom remains optimistic that the trend will reverse once battery technology improves and electric cars can tow heavier loads and travel farther on a single charge.

“I hope batteries get better, with longer range and the ability to tow more,” he said. “Camping is here to stay, and people still want it.”
