The Vesileppis spa in Leppävirta will introduce a themed area as part of a major renovation, with the municipality confirming a Moomin theme is planned.
The spa’s managing director, Esa Salmiheimo, declined to confirm details but said the new themed space would be a significant change for visitors. The theme will be officially announced in August or September.
Leppävirta has allocated €800,000 for the renovation, which includes updating water treatment systems and other technical improvements. The spa, built in 1993, has not undergone major repairs since its construction. Some of its original water treatment equipment is outdated, with replacement parts difficult to source.
Work has already begun, with the largest phase scheduled for August and September, during which the spa will be closed. The municipality owns the property, while operations are managed by its subsidiary, Leppäkerttu Oy.
Municipal manager Matti Raatikainen noted that renovating the existing spa is more cost-effective than building a new one. The facility also serves as a public swimming hall, as Leppävirta lacks a dedicated municipal pool. Raatikainen emphasized that the spa is treated as part of the municipality’s basic services, not as a profit-driven enterprise.
