Vaccine skepticism is rising in the Päijät-Häme region, with more families questioning or refusing childhood vaccinations, according to the local wellbeing services authority.

Health officials report increased debate over the necessity of vaccines in clinics and schools, particularly in Lahti. Social media, especially TikTok, is cited as a key driver, spreading misinformation that undermines trust in vaccination programs.

Some families now decline all vaccines, often due to religious or ideological beliefs linked to natural living. Others interrupt vaccination schedules after mild side effects, such as minor stomach issues following rotavirus shots.

School health services have also noted a higher number of unvaccinated children starting school this year. However, a recent rise in pertussis cases has renewed attention on the disease and the importance of vaccination.

Since last autumn, the wellbeing services authority has required consent from both guardians for childhood vaccinations. Staff have received training from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare on strengthening public confidence in vaccines through fact-based discussions.

Despite the trend, overall vaccination coverage in the region remains high.
