Tampere has started distributing hot soup at food aid sites to prevent recipients from eating their food parcels on the spot, Yle reports.

Marjo Majlund of the Finnish Red Cross (SPR) in Tampere said the practice of eating from the aid packages immediately has emerged in the past two years, driven by hunger. Many arrive so hungry they take a banana or bread from the parcel right away.

“The goal is to ensure the entire food parcel makes it home,” Majlund said.

The soup distribution, funded by the city and organized by SPR, is currently a trial. Officials hope to make it permanent as demand for food aid grows. On Tuesday, a long queue formed in Hervanta for lentil-vegetable soup, with 300 portions prepared. Feedback has been positive, especially after tasting, Majlund noted.

SPR has provided food parcels in Tampere since 2019, with need rising alongside increasing poverty. Majlund emphasized the soup distribution significantly supports current food aid efforts and should become a permanent fixture.

The next soup distributions are planned for August in Pyynikki Church Park and Hervanta.
