The old radar dome on Sornfelli has been dismantled, with work to install a new one set to begin next week, Faroese broadcaster KVF reports.
The previous structure was severely worn, and a Danish authority had set conditions for a new surveillance radar lease agreement, requiring a replacement dome to be erected.
The Faroese road authority Landsverk and the Danish Defence’s Establishment and Terrain Command have signed a lease and cooperation agreement for a new air surveillance radar on Sornfelli. Documents from the Faroese finance committee confirm that one of the stipulations was the installation of a new dome.
The total cost remains unclear, but the direct expense for the new dome and its installation is approximately 8 million DKK—4 million from Landsverk’s regular budget and another 4 million from a one-time island grant approved by the Løgting just before the March election.
The new dome is made of more durable material than its predecessor and is expected to be fully operational by the end of August.
