Municipalities in the Faroe Islands should collaborate on port development to minimise environmental impact and optimise land use, according to a discussion on Faroese public broadcaster KVF.
Birita Wardum, urban architect, stated during the radio series Oyggjar undir trýsti that large-scale rock extraction for port expansion, such as at Glyvursnesi in Havn, damages natural landscapes by creating gaps in cliffsides. She called for national planning to ensure port development is coordinated across municipal borders, preventing scattered construction and maximising efficient land use.
Elsa Berg, mayor of Tórshavn, supported the call for inter-municipal cooperation, acknowledging the complexity of such collaboration but stressing its necessity. She noted that port expansions often bring industrial activity to residential areas, causing disruptions such as increased traffic, noise, and pollution.
Social scientist Sámal Matras Kristiansen previously highlighted that the Faroe Islands’ strong connectivity means economic activity is already concentrated in few locations, exacerbating urban disturbances.
