The Svanfoss lock will remain closed for the rest of the season after rot was discovered in its gates, Dagbladet reports. The decision deals a major blow to boaters, businesses, and tourists along the Vorma, Glomma, and Mjøsa waterways during peak summer.
Lockkeeper Arild Ramstad, who normally opens the lock for summer boaters, now faces the task of explaining why the gates must stay shut. He calls the situation “very sad” and questions why inspections weren’t carried out earlier.
“I think it’s very sad they didn’t examine the lock sooner. Maybe we could have avoided closing it mid-season,” Ramstad said. He acknowledges the importance of safety but argues the closure could have been prevented with better planning.
Tommy Ringstad, co-owner of Ringstadbua in Årnes, describes the impact as “completely tragic,” citing not only financial losses but also the loss of community and activity. His business had stocked up on fuel and beer, built a new dock, and invested heavily in preparations for the season.
“We had expanded our capacity and were really looking forward to it. This is a little gem, and with the weather we’ve had, it could have been a fantastic start to summer,” Ringstad said.
Boat owner Jørn Melbye Vormsund, who frequently uses the lock, says the closure has already disrupted plans for many. “I’ve used the lock a lot, and I know people who can’t get through now. It’s strange and a real shame,” he said.
Nes municipality mayor Tove Nyhus calls the timing “super sad,” noting the waterways are vital to the local economy and community. “After Covid, many have worked hard to revive activity. This is a major setback,” she said.
