The Faroese Red Cross has allocated 500,000 krona to combat a severe Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which has claimed over 580 lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda since May, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

More than 1,700 confirmed infections have been recorded so far. The strain is considered highly dangerous, often fatal, and lacks approved vaccines or specific treatments.

Preventive measures, rapid contact tracing, education, sanitation, and local preparedness are critical to containing the outbreak, which is exacerbated by armed conflict, weakened health infrastructure, and increased cross-border movement in the region.

An estimated 20 to 25 million people in eastern Congo and high-risk areas of Uganda are at risk of infection, partly due to frequent travel between the two countries, including for medical care.

The Red Cross initiative, supported by the Faroese branch, aims to assist three million people living near the Congo-Uganda border.
