A cargo plane operated by Pakistani carrier K2 Airways disappeared from radar over the Arabian Sea on Tuesday evening, and wreckage has now been located, Pakistani aviation authorities confirmed.
The aircraft, a Boeing 737, was en route from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Karachi, Pakistan, when it vanished. Authorities reported the plane was observed in a rapid descent with an abrupt course change before disappearing from radar.
In a statement on its official Facebook page, Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority said the Pakistani Navy and Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, after 12 hours of deep-sea search and rescue operations, successfully located and identified wreckage from the K2 Airways Cargo B737. The debris was recovered 53 nautical miles south of the Pakistani city of Ormara.
Multiple air and sea-based resources were deployed to locate the wreckage. The search for the missing crew members continues, and further updates will be provided as the operation progresses, authorities said.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also confirmed the crash, according to news.com.au, offering condolences to the families of the five crew members and expressing “deep grief, sorrow, and regret over the tragic incident.”
K2 Airways stated on its Facebook page that it is fully cooperating with Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority and other government agencies. The company added, “We continue to pray sincerely for the safety of our colleagues.”
