Surname change to family name now possible in one day

Finland’s Digital and Population Data Services Agency has introduced an automated process allowing adults to change their surname to one previously used by a parent or grandparent, with decisions sometimes issued the same day.

The new system, launched in late June, applies to online applications where the requested surname is verifiable in the population register as belonging to the applicant’s parent, grandmother, or grandfather.
