Fire breaks out on night train to Lapland
A fire started in the battery compartment of a passenger car on a night train bound for Kolari at Seinäjoki railway station, Yle reports. No injuries were reported.
Smoke was detected late Wednesday night, prompting a response from six fire and rescue units. The train’s battery system, composed of modular units, had begun smoldering in one section before spreading to the entire compartment.
Matti Hietalahti, the on-duty fire chief for South Ostrobothnia’s rescue services, said the fire was extinguished using carbon dioxide and powder extinguishers. The older battery type, which was not lithium-based, made suppression easier.
Crews worked for two hours to separate the affected car and fully extinguish the smoldering fire.
