Grindavík faces drastic population decline as residents relocate amid ongoing challenges
Recently, Grindavík has witnessed a significant decline in its population as residents continue to relocate due to ongoing challenges. As of late July, the town had 2,570 registered residents, down from 3,742 in November of the previous year, representing a staggering 31.3% decrease since the town was evacuated on November 10.
Of those registered as residents in Grindavík, 1,906 individuals have temporarily registered their homes outside the town. The majority of those who have moved their residence or registered in another municipality now reside in the capital region, accounting for 45% of relocations, while 39% have settled in the Suðurnes region.
These demographic changes reflect broader concerns about the impacts of natural events and community stability in the area.
