The Finnish Immigration Service expects work-based residence permit applications to increase this year and next compared to 2025, according to updated forecasts from its anticipation network.
In January–May this year, first-time work-based applications reached nearly 6,200, a 16% rise from the same period last year. Industrial projects are cited as the main driver behind the growth.
Total applications for 2026 are now estimated at 11,000–13,000, with 12,000–14,000 projected for 2027.
Meanwhile, study-based residence permit applications have declined. First-time student applications fell by 25% in January–May compared to the previous year.
First-time asylum applications also decreased, with just over 700 filed in the same period—a 7% drop from last year.
