Rømø volunteers tow stranded drivers for free
Two Rømø locals, Danny “Tossen” Thygesen and Chris “Bassen” Rasmussen, have spent the past two years towing cars stuck in the sand on Lakolk Beach—without charging a fee, reports DR.
The pair, both truck drivers by profession, use their own pickup trucks and pay for fuel themselves. They’ve even fitted a front-mounted winch to avoid always needing a tow strap.
By midday Friday, before the heatwave, they had already freed three stranded vehicles. Calls come at all hours, including at 1 a.m., but they always respond.
“We do it as a good deed, to see people smile,” Thygesen said. “There doesn’t always need to be money involved when helping each other.”
Rasmussen added that the gratitude from drivers fills them with positivity. Some motorists insist on giving something in return—once, they accepted a box of apples from German tourists.
Driving is currently permitted only on two of Rømø’s beaches, Lakolk and Sønderstrand, according to the Danish Nature Agency. Some stretches, like Lakolk Beach, can be up to three kilometres wide, with 700 metres from the dunes to the waterline.
