Danish farmers will receive 1.23 billion kroner in compensation under a new nitrogen regulation model agreed Friday by parties behind the green tripartite deal, DR reports.
The agreement, the first environmental and nature deal under the new government, allocates funds to offset farmers’ losses while cutting nitrogen emissions. The model aims to reduce two-thirds of the emissions needed to restore healthy marine ecosystems, according to a press release from the Ministry of Nature and Animal Welfare.
An additional 2.2 billion kroner will fund wetland projects from 2027 to 2030 in high-priority areas. Minister Christian Rabjerg Madsen (S) called the new model a turning point, addressing decades of political failure that led to oxygen depletion and habitat destruction for fish, mussels, and plants.
The green tripartite includes the four governing parties, Venstre, Liberal Alliance, and the Conservatives. The original agreement was signed in late 2024, with a dedicated ministry later renamed the Ministry of Nature and Animal Welfare.
