The EU Council has included the Faroe Islands in a document outlining its desired future cooperation with non-EU Western European countries, Faroese public broadcaster KVF reports.
Bárður á Steig Nielsen, the Faroese minister for foreign affairs and fisheries, said one reason may be that the Faroe Islands “shine a greater light on the EU,” but added that the geopolitical situation also plays a role.
The council’s document notes the Faroese contribution to Ukraine and the islands’ alignment with EU sanctions against Russia. The other countries mentioned are Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Andorra, San Marino, and Monaco.
