Spain topped Copenhagen Airport’s summer travel destinations

Spain was the most popular international destination from Copenhagen Airport in July, when 3.45 million passengers travelled through the airport, DR reported. Passenger numbers were 3.6 per cent higher than in the same month last year, according to a statement from the airport.

Two out of three passengers were international travellers, while Danish travellers accounted for the remaining third.

“Many Danes have gone on holiday, while Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark continue to attract international visitors,” Peter Krogsgaard, the airport’s commercial director, said in the statement.

“Good flight connections make it easier to travel out into the world, but they also make Denmark more accessible to tourists and international business.”

Spain was the most popular destination during the busy summer month, with Malaga, Mallorca and Barcelona the leading destinations. A total of 294,000 passengers travelled between Copenhagen and 12 Spanish destinations with direct connections.

Italy ranked second. The number of passengers travelling between the Danish capital and Italy rose by 11 per cent to 263,000.

“This summer, airlines have added more flights on routes to Italy, and interest in the country has increased significantly,” Krogsgaard said.

“Italian people have also become more interested in visiting Denmark, so we are seeing many travellers from Italy in the terminals this summer.”

According to Krogsgaard, the growing interest from southern European tourists who want to visit Denmark is continuing.

“The trend from previous years is continuing, with travellers from southern Europe taking so-called ‘coolcations’ to destinations with a milder summer climate,” he said.

“Denmark ranks highly on that list, with Scandinavian summer weather and light nights,” the airport said.
