Denmark now collects speeding fines from foreign drivers
Danish police can now effectively issue and collect speeding fines from foreign drivers, after years of technical and administrative hurdles, reports DR.
The Politiets Administrative Center (PAC) has collected over 41 million kroner in the past 18 months from foreign-registered vehicles caught by automatic traffic cameras (ATK). The center has improved its systems and processes to handle these cases more efficiently.
Until the end of 2024, most ATK cases involving non-Nordic foreign vehicles were dropped due to difficulties in identifying owners or drivers and technical limitations. Since December 2024, however, police have intensified efforts using the European Eucaris system to pursue foreign speeding offenders.
While processing these cases still requires significantly more resources than domestic ones—full automation is not yet possible—authorities emphasize the importance for road safety and public sense of justice.
“It means a lot to those handling these cases. It’s about fairness, and it’s satisfying to now process them,” said Marianne Tirsvad Tholstrup Hansen, head of department at PAC.
PAC, based in Midt- og Vestjyllands Police District, serves as a national center handling administrative tasks for all Danish police, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
