The British Royal Navy has offered Denmark a fast-track deal to acquire new frigates and a role in developing a next-generation naval concept, according to Admiral Gwyn Jenkins, the head of the Royal Navy.

Speaking to DR during a visit to Copenhagen this week, Jenkins said Denmark could take over some of the Type-31 frigates already ordered by the UK, bypassing years of waiting for new builds. The offer mirrors a similar arrangement with Norway, which purchased vessels originally destined for the Royal Navy.

The proposal includes participation in the “Hybrid Navy” concept, where frigates control large swarms of heavily armed sea drones. Jenkins cited lessons from the Black Sea, where Ukrainian drone strikes have devastated Russia’s fleet, as the basis for the shift.

“We are building a navy where the core is frigates commanding fleets of unmanned systems,” he said. “This gives each frigate far greater firepower, versatility, and lower operating costs.”

The Type-31 frigate, a development of Denmark’s Iver Huitfeldt-class, would serve as the manned hub for drone operations. Jenkins added that the Royal Navy’s first unmanned escort vessel will enter service next year.

Nick Hine, head of Babcock’s maritime division, said the deal could create 1,500–2,000 Danish jobs, either through local frigate construction or partnership in the hybrid fleet program. Jenkins emphasized the need for expanded European shipyard capacity to build both frigates and combat drones.
