Oslo school opens for midnight World Cup screening
Jordal school in Oslo will stay open late tonight to host a World Cup viewing party for its students, Dagbladet reports.
Rector Halvor Holm said the school will open its doors for students wanting to watch Norway’s first World Cup match in 28 years, which kicks off at midnight. The school has prepared 100 pizzas, large quantities of crisps, and Norwegian flags for the event.
Around 300 junior high students are expected to attend. With no single room large enough, they will be spread across classrooms to ensure a comfortable and safe environment.
“This will be a fun class experience,” Holm said. “It’s also about safety for those who might find large crowds overwhelming.”
The initiative came from teachers, and Holm praised their dedication. “They genuinely care about the students,” he said, noting that many students struggle with social isolation. “Such gatherings help create inclusion.”
Students attending the event will start later and finish earlier the following day, though it will not be a full day off. Those not attending will have a regular school day.
To address safety, parents have signed forms confirming they will ensure their children get home after the match.
Holm, who has led the school for 15 years, said the event is about community. “Even if I’m more into basketball, I’ll be there. It’s about togetherness.”
