The principal of Wintteri School in Uusikaupunki has been dismissed following repeated allegations of harassment targeting both staff and students, according to an official decision obtained by Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
The dismissal follows two formal warnings issued last autumn. The first warning cited inappropriate and disruptive behavior toward a teacher, interpreted as harassment, as well as complaints from staff about excessive familiarity. A second warning was issued roughly two months later after the misconduct persisted, with additional notes on neglect of official duties and unequal treatment of employees.
Arja Kitola, the municipal director of education, made the final decision to terminate the principal’s contract. Before the dismissal, the principal was called to a hearing in May, where the continued misconduct—despite prior warnings—and harassment of both staff and students were addressed as grounds for termination.
The principal, who oversees a school of approximately 800 students, has not responded to Yle’s request for comment. The dismissal includes a six-month notice period but no work obligation during that time. Virve Pihlava-Lahtinen, the deputy principal, has been appointed acting principal while a temporary replacement for her former role is being recruited.
Local police in Southwest Finland confirmed no criminal reports related to the harassment allegations have been filed.
Earlier this year, Wintteri School drew attention after a school health survey revealed that one in four eighth- and ninth-grade students reported being bullied by an adult at the school. In a separate report by Yle, ten current and former students—speaking anonymously due to fear of repercussions—described disturbing behavior by a staff member, with three recounting personal experiences. None accused the individual of sexual harassment.
