A 25-year-old man serving an indefinite preventive detention sentence is accused of masterminding the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old woman in Herning last year, prosecutors revealed in charges filed Tuesday.
The woman, who had no criminal ties herself, was attacked on 7 April 2025 by a 16-year-old boy wielding a knife or sharp object as she walked past an apartment block in eastern Herning, according to Danish broadcaster DR. She died shortly after at a hospital despite immediate first aid.
Prosecutors allege the killing was retaliation for testimony given by one of the victim’s relatives in a prior criminal case linked to Herning’s underworld. The 25-year-old, already under preventive detention for unrelated offences, is accused of directing the attack from prison alongside a 20-year-old family associate. Both men have pleaded not guilty.
The 16-year-old, now 17, carried out the stabbing but has not yet entered a plea. Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence—the harshest penalty in Denmark, with a minimum 20-year term—for the 25-year-old, which would replace his existing preventive detention order.
DR reported that the victim’s relative and the 25-year-old were key figures in Herning’s criminal networks, where rival factions known as the North and East groups have been in conflict. Midt- og Vestjyllands Police declined to comment ahead of the trial, scheduled to begin in November and conclude in early 2027.
Danish Prison and Probation Service has not yet responded to questions about how the alleged prison-coordinated plot was executed or whether procedures will be reviewed.
