The Chief Prosecutor has recommended the temporary suspension of Deputy Prosecutor Helgi Magnús Gunnarsson due to his failure to improve his conduct following previous warnings. According to the Chief Prosecutor, Helgi’s behavior has not met the expected standards for someone in his position, despite being reminded of his responsibilities.
This decision follows a formal complaint made by the charity Solaris against Helgi, primarily regarding comments he made about immigrants and refugees from the Middle East on occasions in mid-July. Solaris has raised concerns regarding his remarks and has filed a complaint with the police, arguing that his comments were inappropriate and unbecoming of his role.
The Chief Prosecutor’s written statement noted that Helgi was previously warned in August 2022 for similar misconduct, reflecting a pattern of behavior deemed unsuitable for someone serving in a prosecutorial capacity. The letter emphasized that a Deputy Prosecutor must serve as a role model for others due to the significant responsibilities associated with the position.
The Chief Prosecutor believes that Helgi has not taken the necessary steps to amend his behavior and has continued to exhibit conduct that undermines his role. As a result, the Chief Prosecutor referred the matter to the Minister of Justice, who has the authority to suspend Helgi from his duties.
Moreover, Helgi and his family have reportedly faced ongoing threats from an individual previously involved in criminal activities, which adds a layer of complexity to his situation. The Chief Prosecutor asserts that the notification process regarding Helgi’s conduct was handled appropriately within the prosecutor’s office.
