A salmon hatchery operated by Bakkafrost Freshwater on the Faroese island of Svínoy has been granted environmental certification, national broadcaster KVF reports.

The facility, repurposed from a former cod hatchery, will rear live fish and produce roe. Under the approved plan, 2,500 smolt will be transported from a hatchery at Áir to the Svínoy site. Two years later, 1,000 fish—each expected to weigh around 12 kilograms—will be moved to saltwater pens for finishing.

Once mature, female fish will be stripped of their roe, yielding an estimated 10 million unfertilized eggs to be returned to the Áir hatchery. The environmental certification decision may be appealed to the Faroese minister of the environment by July 2.
