Man sentenced to eight months for severe property damage in Vaasa, Finland
A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to eight months in conditional imprisonment by the District Court of Ostrobothnia for severe property damage caused by a significant water leak. The incident occurred in Vaasa during the spring of 2021 when the man, reportedly in a hurry to sign an employment contract, left his apartment with the kitchen faucet running and full of dishes.
As a result, water overflowed from the sink, damaging the floor and affecting other apartments, the stairwell, and the basement. While the defendant acknowledged the sequence of events described by the prosecutor, he argued that it could not be classified as a crime, but rather as an unfortunate accident. He denied that he had left the faucet running either carelessly or intentionally.
The court stated that the evidence presented makes it highly implausible that the man accidentally hit the faucet in such a way that it turned on without him noticing. Furthermore, he provided inconsistent accounts of the incident both in court and during the preliminary investigation.
In addition to his prison sentence, the man was ordered to pay over €146,000 in compensation for the repair costs associated with the water damage, as well as legal fees, to the housing company, property owners, and insurance companies. The sentence is now final.
