Demand for COVID-19 tests surges at pharmacies across Iceland amid rising infections

The demand for COVID-19 tests has significantly increased at pharmacies across Iceland, following a rise in infections in recent weeks. A pharmacist at Reykjanes Pharmacy stated that they are struggling to keep up with the demand.

The third summer wave of COVID-19 has spread within the community, prompting the activation of infection control measures at Landspítali Hospital last week. Reports indicate that an average of about 20 tests were sold monthly at Lyfjaver from February to May. However, the numbers soared to approximately 70 in June and surged to 150 in July. The sales figures for this month are comparable to those recorded in December of the previous year.

Sigríður Pálína Arnardóttir, a pharmacist at Reykjanes Pharmacy, noted that more people are purchasing COVID-19 tests than before, with many feeling reassured knowing their status. However, she cautioned that this does not necessarily reflect a higher prevalence of the virus, emphasizing the importance of personal testing to determine whether one should isolate.

The demand for tests has grown so substantially that stocks have been depleted, necessitating new orders. Sigríður mentioned that the current demand is not as critical as it was previously, when knowing one’s COVID status was essential due to strict isolation rules. Now, the significance of having COVID or another flu may not carry the same weight.

Additionally, marketing executives from major retailers report a considerable increase in the sale of COVID tests, noting a 50% rise in the last two weeks alone, indicating a steady rise in demand since late May, amounting to a striking 1300% increase.
