Rescue ship evacuates sick kayaker from Ísafjarðardjúp

A rescue ship evacuated a sick kayaker from a remote part of Ísafjarðardjúp on Thursday morning, mbl.is reported.

The kayaker was part of a group that had pitched tents at Tjaldtangi on Folafót. The Guðmundur í Tungu rescue ship left port shortly before 7.30am with medical transport personnel, according to the Icelandic Accident Prevention Association Landsbjörg.

After a short journey to Tjaldtangi, the ship’s small boat was lowered into the water and went ashore to collect the kayaker.

The kayaker was not believed to be seriously ill but was taken to the Westfjords Health Institution for examination.

This was the fifth medical transport carried out by Guðmundur í Tungu in Ísafjarðardjúp since July 19. After the kayaker was collected, the rest of the group continued its journey through the fjord.
