There is finally a forecast for better summer weather in the coming days, with temperatures expected to rise to around 25 degrees Celsius in several areas. However, these warm days may not be suitable for beach outings, as significant oxygen depletion has been detected in various locations across the country. This has resulted in red flags being raised at beaches, and more areas may be affected in the near future.

This situation has become evident following recent water quality measurements released by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. Strong oxygen depletion has been recorded in Mariager Fjord, Flensborg Fjord, Limfjorden, and waters surrounding South Funen, with moderate depletion observed in several other areas. According to Mikael Hjort Jensen from the agency, the current levels are similar to those of last year.

Experts have expressed alarm over the state of the marine environment. Stiig Markager, a professor in marine ecology, noted that nutrient runoff, primarily from nitrogen, causes rapid algal growth, leading to subsequent oxygen depletion in water bodies as these algae decompose.

While this summer has seen less severe conditions compared to last year, largely due to the cooler and rainier weather, concerns persist. Markager warns that warmer and calmer weather conditions could exacerbate oxygen depletion problems, potentially making this year even worse than last.

Local divers and fishermen have voiced their worries. They have noticed declining marine life and increasing dead zones, particularly in areas traditionally rich in biodiversity. As the situation develops, many are left questioning what conditions will be like when the peak season arrives in September.
