Finnish MP seeks Supreme Court appeal over firearms conviction
Finnish parliament member Timo Vornanen has filed an application with the Supreme Court of Finland requesting leave to appeal his conviction, after the Helsinki Court of Appeal denied further review without a full hearing, public broadcaster Yle reports.
The Supreme Court accepts cases only under exceptional circumstances. Vornanen, who initially appealed his district court verdict to the Court of Appeal, had demanded the dismissal of nearly all charges but admitted to a minor firearms offence.
In his latest appeal, Vornanen questions the legal grounds for the Court of Appeal’s refusal to grant a hearing, arguing that his case raises substantiated doubts about the district court’s ruling. He claims the appeal court’s insufficient reasoning undermines judicial oversight, fair trial guarantees, and his own right to legal protection. The case involves conflicting witness testimonies, alternative accounts of events, and assessments of intent and self-defence, supported by objective video evidence.
A statement from emeritus professor of criminal and procedural law Matti Tolvanen, submitted with the appeal, argues that the case warrants a precedent-setting review. Tolvanen contends that Vornanen provided detailed justification for why a hearing should have been granted and that the district court’s judgment contains apparent errors. The professor criticises the Court of Appeal for failing to address the applicant’s arguments, stating that mere repetition of legal text does not constitute adequate reasoning. The statement also raises concerns about how the severity of the offence and the harshness of the sentence—positioned just below the threshold for automatic appeal rights—factor into the decision to deny a hearing.
Vornanen was sentenced to eight months’ suspended imprisonment by the district court for assault, two counts of illegal threats, reckless handling of a firearm, and firearms offences. A sentence of one day longer would have entitled him to an automatic Court of Appeal hearing without prior leave.
The incident occurred in central Helsinki in the early hours of 26 April 2024, when Vornanen, after a night at Bar Ihku in the Kamppi district, became involved in an altercation with a group of men. He allegedly threatened them with a pocket gun and fired a warning shot into the street. Yle obtained surveillance footage of the event from Helsinki Police.
