Swedish opposition demands government action after elite boarding school abuse allegations
Sweden’s Social Democrats are calling on the government to intervene after a documentary exposed allegations of racism, hazing, and physical abuse at Lundsberg, one of the country’s most prestigious boarding schools.
Speaking to public broadcaster SVT, the party’s education spokesperson Anders Ygeman said the School Inspectorate must ensure no student in Sweden faces an unsafe learning environment. “Any institution that cannot guarantee the safety and security of its students has no place in this country,” he stated.
Ygeman placed ultimate responsibility on the government, declaring it “accountable for schooling in Sweden.”
The Left Party’s education spokesperson, Isabell Mixter, went further, demanding Lundsberg’s closure. “The testimonies of severe racism and violence are horrifying—this cannot be allowed in any school,” she told SVT. Mixter criticized both the school’s failure to address recurring issues and the Inspectorate’s lack of enforcement tools to shut down failing institutions.
The allegations stem from SVT’s Dokument inifrån: Arvtagarna, which aired student accounts of systemic abuse. Lundsberg’s administration has called the footage “abhorrent,” but SVT reported that Education Minister Simona Mohamsson (Liberals) had not responded to requests for comment.
