Kringvarp Føroya reports that the Faroese social welfare agency, Almannaverkið, is to be granted authority to raise the income base used to calculate compensation paid to people who lose earnings because they must care for others.

The compensation applies to people caring for a child with a disability or chronic illness, to those caring for a dying person, or to those caring for someone with an acquired brain injury. It is also paid to parents who lose a child.

The authority to raise the income base will apply in cases where a person has received full-time compensation for an extended period and where the originally set income base is lower than the income they would under normal circumstances have been expected to earn.

The proposal has been put forward by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing and is currently out for consultation.

The maximum monthly compensation this year is 31,000 krónur. In both 2024 and 2025, the figure was 26,814 krónur.
