A luxury SUV driver has been charged with negligent homicide after crossing into oncoming traffic at high speed on Norway’s Constitution Day, killing one passenger, Dagbladet reports.

The crash occurred Sunday evening near Gjelleråsen in Nittedal, north of Oslo. Police confirmed Monday that the driver of an orange high-performance SUV, which allegedly veered into the wrong lane, now faces charges of negligent homicide.

“The driver is accused of crossing into oncoming traffic, resulting in a fatality,” police prosecutor Caroline Kvaal Engebretsen told the newspaper. The deceased was a passenger in the same vehicle.

Four people were injured in the collision, with two initially reported in critical condition. Authorities have not yet interviewed the driver or other involved parties. Technical investigations and witness statements are ongoing to determine the exact speed, though initial assessments suggest “very high velocity,” according to Øst Police District’s on-call lawyer, Harald Holmsen. The speed limit at the crash site is 60 km/h.

Vehicle records show the SUV—a 2.2-tonne model capable of accelerating from 0–100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, with a top speed of 306 km/h—was sold for 2.3 million Norwegian kroner just two days before the incident. Police have not confirmed whether alcohol or drugs were factors.

Nittedal Mayor Rune Winum (Conservative Party) called the crash “deeply tragic” and confirmed the municipality’s crisis team is on standby to assist affected families.

The road remained closed for hours as the Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority conducted on-site examinations.
