Glacial flood predicted at Mýrdalsjökull as conductivity levels rise in Icelandic rivers

Saturday 27th July 2024 on 14:38 in Iceland Iceland

An anticipated glacial flood may be beginning at Mýrdalsjökull, as increased electrical conductivity has been detected in rivers around the glacier. It is believed that geothermal water is leaking beneath the glacier.

This morning, the Meteorological Office issued a warning indicating that gas detectors at Láguhvola have recorded elevated levels over the past 24 hours. Reports have also surfaced regarding a sulfur odor near rivers originating from Mýrdalsjökull.

Unusually high conductivity readings have been noted in the Skálm River near road V412, prompting authorities to advise the public to avoid the areas close to the Múlakvísl river outlets and Kötlujökull glacier.

Monitoring continues as the situation develops.
