Finnish police are investigating a 12-year-old moped rider on suspicion of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety after the boy died in a collision with a van in Juuka, eastern Finland, Yle reports. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when the boy rode from a forest road onto the path of the oncoming vehicle.

The van, carrying multiple passengers, struck the moped rider on Nunnanlahdentie road in the Tervonkangas area. Detective Chief Inspector Jari-Matti Korhonen told Yle that not all occupants of the vehicle have yet been interviewed as part of the investigation.

Authorities confirmed the moped was unregistered and lacked licence plates, though Korhonen emphasised that registration status was irrelevant, as Finnish law prohibits 12-year-olds from operating mopeds on public roads. Technical investigations suggest visibility at the scene may have been obstructed by trees and terrain features.

Preliminary findings indicate the van was not speeding, and its driver is not suspected of any offence. If the deceased boy remains the sole suspect in the case, police will conclude the preliminary investigation without forwarding it to prosecutors.

Local residents have placed candles and flowers at the accident site in tribute.
