AI should not be used to assess students, says Faroese secondary school teacher

A secondary school teacher in the Faroe Islands has argued that artificial intelligence should not be used to evaluate students, though teaching methods and assessment approaches must adapt to new technology, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Páll Isholm, a Faroese language and media studies teacher at Kambsdalur Secondary School, wrote in the latest issue of the magazine Sosialurin that relying on AI for exams risks sending students with developmental needs into potentially misleading tests.

“When we turn to AI for assessments, are we not sending people who may have different developmental needs into tests that could be deceptive?” Isholm asked in an article titled “Vit og vitlíkið” (We and AI).

He stressed that the solution is not for teachers and schools to act as “exam police” but to rethink teaching and evaluation methods. “It is the teaching itself and the assessment of students that must be reconsidered and changed,” he said.

The topic will be further discussed in a radio segment on Vikun at 10:05 AM on Saturday.
