The Centre Party in the Faroe Islands is two signatures short of the support needed to postpone the implementation of a new abortion law, party leader Steffan Klein Poulsen has told Frihedsbrevet.fo.

The law, approved to take effect on 1 June 2026, would now be delayed until 1 January 2027 if the party succeeds in its bid to push back the date by six months. Poulsen admitted the effort may fail due to insufficient backing, despite having 14 of the 16 required signatures.

“We’ve been clear about wanting to make changes,” Poulsen said. “But time is too short to draft amendments or propose a new law, so we’re attempting to delay implementation by half a year.”

If the postponement fails, Poulsen confirmed the party will instead work on revising the abortion legislation, with proposals expected in the next parliamentary session.
