The Danish Road Directorate will convert a 13.5-kilometre stretch of the Hillerød motorway extension into a single-lane road following a series of severe accidents, DR reports.

The decision follows a meeting with concerned mayors from Allerød, Hillerød, Furesø, and Gribskov municipalities, who had requested urgent action. The section, currently under expansion to become a full motorway, has seen repeated serious collisions, including fatal crashes in recent years.

Currently configured as a 2-1 road—alternating between two and one lane in each direction—the stretch is among Denmark’s busiest. While statistics show its accident rate is not higher than comparable roads, authorities have recorded multiple head-on collisions, at least one of which was fatal.

In 2024, speed limits were reduced from 90 km/h to 80 km/h after a deadly crash, but further incidents have since occurred. The Road Directorate will now install a marked central barrier with red-and-white delineators to prevent overtaking while allowing emergency and wide vehicles to pass.

Work to modify the road layout is expected to begin this week.
