Faroese consumers face rising food prices while Denmark sees cuts
As Danish supermarket chains reduce prices on hundreds of grocery items, Faroese consumers are likely to see further price increases, according to the director of FK, a Faroese trade association.
Danish retailers Netto and Lidl have announced price cuts on staples such as butter and minced meat, but the Faroe Islands are moving in the opposite direction, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
Claus Lundberg, director of FK, said transport companies have warned of rising shipping costs due to high oil prices. Since the Faroe Islands import most of their food, increased fuel and packaging expenses—both linked to oil—are pushing prices up.
“It is uncertain whether the Danish price reductions will be reflected in the Faroese market,” Lundberg said. “Instead, there is a risk that Faroese consumers will face even higher food prices.”
