Major Copenhagen street closes to cars for seven-month green space trial
A key section of Vesterbrogade in central Copenhagen will close to vehicular traffic from Friday as part of a seven-month trial to create a temporary green urban space, state broadcaster DR reports.
The stretch in front of Tivoli Gardens and Industriens Hus will be transformed into a pedestrian-friendly area with wooden decks, new trees, planters, and seating until December 1. The closure between Hammerichsgade, Bernstorffsgade, and H.C. Andersens Boulevard takes effect early Friday morning.
Buses, cyclists, and pedestrians may still use the route, though traffic will be redirected to the north side of the street, away from City Hall Square. Nine existing parking spaces will be removed, though two accessible parking spots will be established on nearby Jernbanegade.
Detour routes have been set up for drivers: those heading toward Amager should use Bernstorffsgade and Tietgensgade, while those traveling toward Søerne should take Hammerichsgade. The city will install signage to guide motorists during the trial.
Climate and Technical Affairs Mayor Line Barfod (EL) said the pilot aims to test how the area functions with increased greenery and space for urban life, day and night. “The trial period will show us what works and what doesn’t,” she told DR. “When we design a permanent solution in the future, we can adapt it based on these experiences.”
The project, originally proposed by Tivoli in collaboration with Gehl Architects, has been in development since 2019. The city hopes to eventually establish a permanent urban park in the area.
