Electrical conductivity rises as gas pollution warning issued

Electrical conductivity in the Múlakvísl river has risen steadily over the past 24 hours, reaching about 240 µS/cm, mbl.is reports. The increase indicates that a small glacial outburst flood may be under way.

Water levels in the river have not risen alongside the increased conductivity so far, but the Icelandic Meteorological Office says levels could increase in the coming days.

Gas pollution has also been detected in the area. Visitors are advised to exercise caution and leave if they experience symptoms such as burning in the eyes or throat.

A glacial outburst flood began in Múlakvísl on August 18 and continued for several days. During the event, significant gas pollution and high conductivity were recorded, with conductivity reaching more than 500 µS/cm on August 19.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office continues to monitor the area closely and will provide further information as developments warrant.
