The Faroe Islands’ annual Closed for Maintenance initiative, organised by Visit Faroe Islands, began today, with international volunteers carrying out repairs and improvements at 10 tourist sites across the archipelago over the next three days.

The projects include installing a fence and paving a path in Koltur, roadwork in Nólsoy, upgrades to the viewing platform at Trøllkonufingur in Sandavágur, and constructing a new viewpoint at Eiði in Vágar. Additional work will take place in Funningur, Gjógv, Skopun, the route between Tórshavn and Kirkjubøur, Dalur, and Viðareiði, where a small forest will be planted.

The concept, a Faroese innovation, invites volunteers from abroad to contribute to maintaining and enhancing the islands’ natural and cultural sites. Jóhan Pauli Helgason, cultural manager at Visit Faroe Islands, oversees the initiative.

First launched in 2019, the project aims to preserve the Faroe Islands’ landscapes while promoting sustainable tourism through direct community involvement.
