Danish audit slams weak oversight of pig welfare controls
A new report by Denmark’s national audit office has sharply criticised the country’s system for monitoring pig welfare, revealing flaws that allow producers to evade inspections and leave violations unaddressed.
The Rigsrevisionen audit found that the selection process for inspection sites is inadequate, as the division of production facilities under separate CVR business registration numbers enables producers to avoid oversight. The report also highlights deficient official guidelines and a lack of follow-up on documented breaches of welfare regulations.
According to the findings, published Tuesday, the shortcomings undermine the effectiveness of welfare controls in Denmark’s pork industry.
