Danish tax authority begins returning 26.7 billion kroner to taxpayers
The Danish Tax Agency (Skattestyrelsen) has started repaying 26.7 billion kroner (approximately €3.6 billion) in overpaid taxes to nearly four million citizens, national broadcaster DR reports. The average refund amounts to around 6,700 kroner (€900) per taxpayer.
Ulrick Junge, deputy director at the Tax Agency, stated that most recipients will see the funds in their accounts by Friday morning. “When you log into your bank, you’ll be able to see it from the morning,” he said. Exceptions apply to those with outstanding public debts or missing tax information.
The Capital Region of Denmark will receive the largest share of refunds, with 9.2 billion kroner distributed to roughly 1.3 million residents. Meanwhile, about 800,000 taxpayers owe an additional 7.9 billion kroner in underpaid taxes, averaging 9,850 kroner per person.
Junge reminded citizens that refunds represent their own overpaid taxes from the previous year. He encouraged taxpayers to review their 2026 preliminary income assessments to ensure accurate withholding. “It’s a good opportunity now, when receiving last year’s refund, to check if this year’s assessment matches your current situation,” he advised.
