The newly opened Crown Bridges in Helsinki saw its first cycling accident on Wednesday, just days after warnings were issued about dangerous expansion joints on the structure, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

A cyclist was injured after falling at one of the bridge’s known hazard points, where a three-centimetre drop between the cycle path and the expansion joint poses a risk of wheels getting caught. Emergency services attended the scene, with a Yle journalist who arrived by bike reporting that the cyclist was immobilised on the ground before being transported to an ambulance with neck support.

Helsinki city officials have announced plans to address the hazard by adding warning markings and potentially traffic signs near the problematic joints. Authorities are still evaluating how to safely position signs along the relatively narrow cycle lane.

The bridge, which opened to traffic last Saturday, has faced criticism over the unmarked drops at both ends. While the city has decided to paint warning colours at the joint locations, discussions continue on additional safety measures. Earlier this week, Yle reported on the risks posed by the joints, which can cause cyclists to lose control if a wheel strikes the uneven surface.

“Not everyone follows the news closely enough to know about this hazard,” said Yle reporter Jouni Munukka, who witnessed the aftermath of the accident. “Tourists might also use the bridge without being aware of the risk.”
