Police warn of pickpocket duo targeting elderly in southern Finland
Police in southern Finland have issued a warning about two pickpockets operating in the region, specifically targeting elderly individuals, reports public broadcaster Yle. Authorities suspect many incidents have gone unreported, as victims often assume they simply misplaced their wallets.
According to Detective Sergeant Janne Levälampi of the Eastern Uusimaa Police, the suspects have followed victims, observed their PIN codes at ATMs, stolen wallets unnoticed, and withdrawn cash from accounts. “We suspect there have been many such cases, but far from all have been reported to police,” Levälampi stated.
Police advise caution when using ATMs, recommending that individuals ensure no one is standing too close during transactions and that PIN codes are shielded with a hand. They also urge people to check on elderly relatives or acquaintances to confirm their wallets and bank accounts remain secure.
In one confirmed case in Kerava, the suspects followed a victim, observed their PIN, stole their wallet without detection, and withdrew money from their account.
