Around 40 Citroën 2CV enthusiasts from across Europe are spending nearly a month touring Iceland in 22 cars, mbl.is reports.
The group arrived by ferry in Seyðisfjörður on 4 August and has travelled through North Iceland and the Westfjords. It is now in the Reykjavík area before returning east and leaving Iceland on 27 August.
The travellers were in northwest Iceland on 12 August, when they watched the solar eclipse. “We saw the eclipse until the final moments, when the moon went completely in front of the sun,” British participant Steve Hill told Morgunblaðið.
The group includes, among others, three Britons, seven Swiss, seven Greeks, five Germans, two French people and two Swedes. The participants are members of 2CV clubs in several European countries and usually camp during their journeys, using their Citroën cars as transport.
“For several years, members of 2CV clubs in Europe have organised trips. We have travelled to the United States and Australia, among other places. This time it was Iceland,” Hill said.
The participants share an interest in the Citroën 2CV specifically, rather than Citroën cars in general. Because they are travelling in the same model, they do not need to carry various types of spare tyres or parts.
The 2CV first went on sale in 1948 and was produced until 1986. Many of the travellers have known one another for 30 to 40 years through regular meetings on trips and at other events.
