The Siikaneva hiking trails in Pirkanmaa, Finland, will stay open after Ruoveden municipality agreed to take over maintenance from the state forest agency, reports Yle.

The popular nature area, known for its extensive bog landscapes, was set to close in 2026 due to deteriorating duckboard trails posing safety risks. However, Ruoveden municipality has now signed a 10-year usage agreement with Metsähallitus (Finland’s state forest enterprise), ensuring the trails remain accessible.

Under the deal, the municipality will be responsible for upkeep and visitor safety, though Metsähallitus retains ownership of the land. The initial agreement covers a 0.45-hectare area, including the Pikkulatos island loop and its campfire site, with plans to expand later.

Ruoveden’s municipal director, Toni Leppänen, called the €2,500 annual cost “reasonable,” though additional expenses for repairs—such as replacing nearly 4 km of duckboards—will be significant. Work is expected to begin before summer, prioritizing the shortest route first.

Local hikers welcomed the decision. Toivo Vehmaanperä, a frequent visitor, noted the area’s high usage, especially in autumn, but questioned whether trail maintenance should fall to the municipality rather than the state.

The agreement requires the site to remain free and open to all. Leppänen acknowledged strong community support, with volunteers already offering help for repairs.
